Short Version
- It's unprofitable (change that by donating)
- Old, complex code
- Many outdated dependencies
- Requires a lot of time
Long version
ClassQuiz has gotten popular. Like really popular:
- 6000 quizzes on ClassQuiz.de
- 8300 users registered on ClassQuiz.de
- 500+ stars on GitHub
- 5000 unique visitors/month on ClassQuiz.de
- 22000+ pageviews/month on ClassQuiz.de
What I get from that:
- 3€/month
- rare one-time donations (on average 2€/month)
What ClassQuiz costs me:
- Domains and server: 6€/month
So, as you might see, that's an issue and the main reason I don't put any time into ClassQuiz anymore as using my time for my shop is just way more profitable. And as I don't have infinite time, there's no reason for me to work on ClassQuiz at the moment. And that's also what frustrates me: I haven't sold too many items, but I am still in plus, even if I would pay my working hours invested into creating the open hardware and software. In comparison, ClassQuiz has thousands of users and I loose money with operating costs of 6€/month while providing a software for thousands of users. That doesn't seem fair at all. I also want to be really clear about the fact that I don't need the money and can sustain myself without this income, but the point remains.
Other voluntary work
As ClassQuiz isn't my only unpaid voluntary work, there's also
- the APsystems library
- the APsystems Home Assistant Integration
- Unpolular sideprojects (such as SimpleSelfhostAuth or staticshort) with many more ideas
- Helping children playing table tennis
- Playing table tennis myself 3-4 times a week (though not voluntary in this regard)
Future
I don't really see this going anywhere: I may have to put an ultimatum on ClassQuiz with a fundraising or something, otherwise ClassQuiz will get more and more outdated with a still growing userbase.
So, in short: I'd need compensation for the time I put into ClassQuiz as using my spare time for my shop is infinitely more profitable. I don't expect the same earnings from CalssQuiz as from my shop, but at least that much that I could at least finance any cup of coffee while working on ClassQuiz on weekends.
